Using memory wire - memory wire bangle

Memory wire is a fantastic product, it allows for quick and easy jewellery construction that doesn’t in the least bit detract from the final design. Memory wire is an excellent choice for junior and senior workshops as it is easy to handle, the memory wire is easy to thread beads onto and does not need a closure attached or specific sizing. It is these very same attributes that make memory wire an excellent choice for childrens and seniors jewellery, no fussing with clasps, my mum absolutely loves to be able to just slip her bracelets on and off.

Before we move on however a tip to the wise, DO NOT use your good pliers with memory wire.
Cutters will need to be heavy duty wire cutters as found in the hardware or better still dedicated memory wire cutters as found in our tools section.
We also recommend using an old pair of round nose or chain pliers if possible.

So what is memory wire? Memory wire is a hard steel wire that has been coiled to a specific size. This wire holds its coiled shape and can be slipped on and off with ease.

When constructing our lovely pearl and crystal bangle we cut over 1 1/2 loops to allow for some cross over reducing the risk of the weight of the beads causing the bangle to open, for very light beads a single coil may be fine. You can have as many coils as you desire, though for a necklace this can make it difficult to get on and off.

TIP: Remember to use special cutters, if you use your everyday cutters they will have a nick taken out of them as the wire will be harder than the cutter steel.

You now have the option to turn the end over with round or chain nose pliers or to attach a bead cap with super glue.

When turning a loop we turn it in so it will not catch on clothing, some like to turn them sideways as they find the loops can scratch but we don’t have that problem.

If you are gluing on a bead cap (1/2 drilled bead) we have found you get a more secure fit by gluing the end cap with your end bead onto the wire (image below). Be sure you have your design finalised before you do this as there will be no chance to alter later.

Now all you need do is thread on your beads and finish on the other end as you began. Try to have a good fit at the end so the beads dont move around too much unless of course that is your intent.

If you have created a loop on the ends you can add a little charm.
